“Eurorama. L’Europa dei popoli nei festival del cinema etnografico”, sezione a cura del Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina giunta quest’anno all’XI edizione, presenta 13 documentari etnografici ambientati in 11 diversi paesi. La formula consueta è quella che propone al Trento Film Festival film selezionati e in molti casi premiati presso i maggiori festival europei del settore antropo-visuale, suddivisi in due differenti giornate tematiche.
La prima giornata affronta i temi della documentazione e del racconto del ricco e poliedrico patrimonio immateriale che troviamo in Europa, con il contemporaneo trasformarsi di molte tradizioni: il linguaggio non verbale dei pastori, le tecniche di pesca nel Mediterraneo, la musica e il canto di tradizione orale, la transumanza del bestiame lungo antiche rotte e i riti di fertilità di origine pagana…
La seconda giornata è dedicata al tema delle migrazioni, con le difficoltà di profughi e richiedenti asilo che, in fuga da altri continenti, raggiungono per mare le sponde europee in cerca di un rifugio. Alcuni film ci introdurranno invece con occhi di donna e attraverso vicende intense negli universi culturali dell’Africa e del vicino Medio Oriente.
“Eurorama. A Europe of peoples in Ethnographic Film Festivals“, under the direct curatorship of the Trentino Folklife Museum comes to its 11th edition, with some 13 documentaries from 11 different countries. The formula offers the best of ethnographic cinema on Europe, with a selection of award-winners or otherwise distinguished films captured in all major European festivals of the anthro-visual sector. The films are screened in two days, each with a specific theme.
The first day deals with issues of documentation, as regards the multifaceted intangible heritage of Europe and the many evolving traditions of the contemporary world: non-verbal languages of shepherds, fishing techniques in the Mediterranean, orally transmitted musical scores and styles, livestock transhumances along ancient routes, pagan fertility rites…
The second day is devoted to the issue of migration, with the difficulties of the refugees and asylum seekers fleeing from other continents by sea to reach the shores of Europe in search of refuge. On the same day, some films will introduce us instead, with a woman’s eyes and through intense vicissitudes, in the cultural universes of Africa and the Near East.

Un pastore non comunica solo con le persone, ma anche con il suo gregge: lo fa producendo suoni che, se per l’orecchio umano sono una cacofonia incomprensibile, per capre e pecore sono un linguaggio vero e proprio.
A shepherd communicates with his herd like he does with people. While the sounds he makes are incomprehensible to the human ear, to goats and sheep they are a real language which they can understand.

Il Delta del Danubio in Romania, “l’ultima riserva d’Europa”, è tra i siti UNESCO del Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità. Se si fanno grandi sforzi per proteggere la biodiversità, la situazione delle comunità locali è in gran parte trascurata. I sociologi sostengono che la grande palude possa influenzare negativamente sulla vita degli abitanti del villaggio. Ma è giusto dar la colpa alla natura?
The Danube Delta in Romania – the ‘Last European Sanctuary’ – is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While major efforts are made to protect biodiversity, the plight of local communities is largely overlooked. Social scientists claim that the traumatic nature of the swamp bears heavy on the villagers’ lives. But is Nature really to blame?

Il film presenta una ricerca sul Mediterraneo, ed è l’ode che una giovane donna dedica a suo nonno: il ritratto di un gruppo di uomini che si battono per preservare la pesca tradizionale nel contesto mutevole della vita moderna.
The film presents a study of the Mediterranean, an ode of a young woman to her grandfather, a portrait of a group of men who are fighting to preserve the tradition of catching fish in an ever-changing landscape of modern life.

APRICOT TREE ETHNOGRAPHIC FILM FESTIVAL 2016

Una festa popolare nell’Europa rurale, dove ancestrali riti arborei e pagani entrano in simbiosi con la religione cattolica. Ogni anno a Pentecoste, nel villaggio di Accettura, in Basilicata, una quercia ed un agrifoglio, chiamati rispettivamente Maggio e Cima, rappresentano il principio maschile e quello femminile della natura: abbattuti in due diverse foreste, vengono trasportati in paese.
A folk ritual of rural Europe in which ancestral arboreal rituals intertwine with the Catholic religion. Every year at Whitsuntide in the small town of Accettura, in the Basilicata region, one Oak and one Holly, respectively called May and Top, are called to represent the Male and Female principle of Nature. Felled in two different forests, they are ritually driven into the village.

A Cuglieri, Sardegna centro-occidentale, le cerimonie religiose della Settimana Santa sono accompagnate da su cuncordu (il coro), formato da quattro cantori che eseguono il Miserere e lo Stabat Mater in lingua latina. Sono canti di grande complessità e di straordinario interesse musicologico, che si sono conservati fino ad oggi per tradizione orale. Il film mette a confronto due generazioni di cantori, mentre sono impegnati nelle tre giornate più intense e significative del rito.
In Cuglieri, a small town in midwestern Sardinia, festivities during Holy Week are accompanied by a small choir called a concordu. The choir is composed of four male voices, and they perform in Latin the Miserere and Stabat Mater. The tradition is of extraordinary musicological interest, having been passed on orally to the present day. The film presents two generations of singers while they are active in the three most intense and meaningful days of Holy Week.

La misteriosa battaglia di Mons si svolge fin dal Medioevo. In una piccola città del Belgio, ogni anno, la gente del posto si trasforma in una folla selvaggia e chiassosa. Una volta che i combattenti mettono i piedi sul campo di battaglia, faranno di tutto per strappare qualche pelo dalla coda di un drago che, secondo una leggenda, porterà loro fortuna.
The mysterious battle of Mons has been waged since the Middle Ages. Here, in a small town of Belgium, each year the locals are transformed into a wild and rowdy mob. Once the fighters step foot onto the battlefield, they will go to great lengths to snatch a few hairs from the tail of a dragon which, according to a legend, will bring them good luck.

Il film segue una famiglia di pastori nomadi che viaggia con le sue 350 capre lungo le antiche rotte migratorie, alternando gli inverni sul Mediterraneo alle estati sui monti Tauri. La regista documenta uno stile di vita che affonda le sue radici in tradizioni risalenti al XII secolo e affronta oggi le sfide di un mondo sempre più urbanizzato.
The film follows a family of nomadic goat herders as they and their 350 animals travel the ancient seasonal migration routes, alternating winters on the Mediterranean shores and summers on the Taurus mountains. The author documents a lifestyle in transition – one that has roots in traditions dating to the 12th century but now faces the challenges of an increasingly urbanized world.

Hotel Splendid è un ritratto, tanto intimo che collettivo, della vita di una comunità di migranti africani che alloggiano in un albergo per richiedenti asilo a Cesenatico. Il film documenta le esperienze quotidiane presso una struttura che funge da rifugio, intrecciando due differenti storie: il dramma del viaggio intrapreso dai migranti per raggiungere l’Europa, con violenze e abusi, e l’itinerario che i richiedenti asilo devono seguire, fino a quando le procedure di valutazione non saranno state espletate.
Hotel Splendid is an intimate as well as collective portrayal of life in a community of migrants from the African coast who are sheltered in a facility for political asylum seekers in Cesenatico, Italy. The film records the daily experiences in a hotel that is used as a shelter, intertwining two different story-lines: the dramatic journey undertaken by the migrants to reach Europe, with its violences and abuses, and the itinerary that asylum seekers must follow once they enter the refuge, right until the evaluation procedure is completed.

Bintou è una giovane sarta del Burkina Faso, che sogna una carriera in Europa. Ama condurre uno stile di vita moderno. Improvvisamente la sua vita è stravolta perché deve nuovamente assumersi la responsabilità per la propria figlia, che vive in un istituto per bambini. Bintou è il ritratto di una donna giovane e forte, alla ricerca di un suo posto tra la cultura tradizionale e quella moderna, tra la maternità e la carriera.
Bintou is a young dressmaker from Burkina Faso and dreaming of a career in Europe. She loves to lead a modern lifestyle. Suddenly her life is turned upside-down when she has to take responsibility for her own daughter again who has been living in a children’s home so far. Bintou is the portrait of a strong woman looking for her place between traditional and modern culture, between motherhood and career.

Ogni estate molti turisti europei si recano in vacanza nell’isola greca di Lesbo. Lo scorso anno migliaia di rifugiati hanno attraversato il mare dalla Turchia e sono arrivati sull’isola in cerca di un rifugio sicuro in seno all’Unione europea. I registi hanno chiesto a turisti e rifugiati di conversare assieme affrontando diversi temi.
Every summer many European tourists travel to the Greek island Lesbos for a sunny holiday. Last year thousands of refugees crossed the sea from Turkey and arrived on the island as well, looking for a safe haven in the European Union. The filmmakers invited tourists and refugees to talk to one another about several topics.

La sedicenne Sepideh ha un sogno: studiare astronomia e diventare astronauta. I suoi modelli sono Albert Einstein e la sua eroina, l’astronauta Anousheh Ansari, la prima iraniana nello spazio. Sognare le dà speranza e la fa sentire in contatto con suo padre, ma in Iran, alle ragazze non è consentito anche solo uscire la sera.
Sixteen-year-old Sepideh has a dream: she wants to study astronomy and become an astronaut. Her role models are Albert Einstein and her heroin, astronaut Anousheh Ansari, the first Iranian in space. Stargazing gives her hope and makes her feel connected to her father, but in Iran, for girls it is even inappropriate to go out at night.

Cosa si nasconde dentro lo smartphone di un rifugiato? Contiene indizi, ricordi, identità e contatti legati al mondo da cui si è fuggiti. Questo film racconta la quotidianità di un piccolo negozio di cellulari, in uno dei più grandi campi di rifugiati al mondo.
What’s hidden inside the smartphone of a refugee? It contains clues to a refugee’s memories, past, identity and some contacts from the world he had to flee from. This film narrates the daily life of a tiny mobile phone shop in one of the largest refugee camps in the world.
NORDIC ANTHROPOLOGICAL FILM ASSOCIATION FESTIVAL 2016

In un piccolo salone da parrucchiera di Haifa, in Israele, la regista ha installato una telecamera proprio sopra al lavandino. Mentre lava i capelli alle clienti, discute con loro su vari argomenti, come la politica e l’amore. Queste conversazioni forniscono un’immagine accurata e sincera della società contemporanea in Israele
At a small hair salon in Haifa, owned by an Arab Christian, the director installed a small camera over the sink. While she washed the customers’ hair, she discussed various subjects with them, such as politics and love. These discussions ultimately created a sincere and accurate image of contemporary Israel.
